Difficult and enduring problems rarely admit of easy, inexpensive or popular solutions. The business of politics has become the business of re-election - short-term thinking, low-hanging fruit, deferring the tough calls to some future government or society. I suspect that the expertise and analyses rendered by a seasoned bureaucracy are often ignored in favour of a good sound bite or slogan.
