Not Just Vile

Vladimir Putin has gone to war with Ukraine. In the United States, right-wing pundits and politicians are lining up with Putin. Max Boot writes:

Tucker Carlson has become Putin’s No. 1 American apologist — and a favorite of Russian state television — by incessantly arguing that the United States has no stake in Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. “Vladimir Putin does not want Belgium,” Carlson says. “He just wants to keep his western borders secure. That’s why he doesn’t want Ukraine to join NATO, and that makes sense.”

Carlson’s views are echoed by other America Firsters. Right-wing troll Candace Owens tweets: “NATO (under direction from the United States) is violating previous agreements and expanding eastward. WE are at fault.” Her fellow troll Charlie Kirk opines: “It feels as if Putin is going into places that want him. … It is a family dispute that we shouldn’t get in the midst of, that’s for certain.” Ohio Senate candidate J.D. Vance said, “I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine.” Fox’s Maria Bartiromo imaginatively suggested that the Biden administration’s “hysteria” about a Russian invasion of Ukraine might be a “ruse” to distract from the latest nonsensical allegations about Hillary Clinton spying on Trump.

This is the authentic voice of Trump’s America First movement — and it would be solidly in control of a second Trump term in a way it was not during most of his first term. Indeed, if Trump stages a comeback in 2024, he might well be counting on more political aid from Putin of the kind that he received in 2016.

In Canada, Conservative senator Denise Batters claims that the demonstrators in Ottawa were "friendly," "patriotic," and are being demonized by the "chattering classes." And, in the House, Conservative MP Ziad Aboultaif argues that what happened in Ottawa amounted to a "parking problem."

Proof that the right-wing isn't just vile. It's insane.

The Cons may be insane, but even they know that their western base is full of people of Ukrainian descent. Putin's invasion of Ukraine is one issue where the Cons are going to have to break with Trump, and that's going to hurt. Harper has already given marching orders on this: "The Putin regime used recent years of well-intentioned Western outreach and dialogue to his full advantage. But the lessons of 1938 remain true today. There can be no further compromises; no naive "resets" or diplomatic niceties. Dictators must be dealt with like all bullies; with resolute unity and force."

We'll soon see whether Putin has compromat on any of the Cons.

To me it stinks of manufacture
NATO danced and pranced and preened screamed
and did everything it could short of helping the Ukraine
Tongue wagging and finger pointing didn't stop Ruble Harbor
Russia will crush the military , forgive any Ukrainian soldier laying down arms
continue to invade and avoid war destruction as much as possible.
The loss of the current Ukraine government being an actual loss is questionable
The great news for the west is now there is another excuse to ignore climate change , the 6th extinction , the income gap , plastic and chemical pollution and the list goes on .
And compared to the new Satan every western politician just got his wings despite previous continuous behavior and policies far more damaging.
Austerity will ensue , hands will be rung , ordinance will be ordered , sanctions hurt on both sides , and Russia will open new industry to fill the gap and trade with India and China.
This will be predatory disaster capitalism at its best
and we will demand retaliation and escalation .
Did anybody see where I put that Doomsday Clock?

Chrystia Freeland is one of those western Canadians of Ukrainian descent. Her grandparents on her mother's side were Ukrainian displaced persons post WWII. She studied Russian history and literature at Harvard and then did MA Slavonic studies at Oxford. She speaks Ukrainian and Russian as well as French and Italian.

But she is no longer Minister of Foreign Affairs, however, rather Minister of Finance at this point. Too bad, her background would make her ideal to handle this situation, at least, if you think knowledge matters.

This is a very dangerous moment, lungta.

I suspect she's being consulted on this file, ffd -- regardless of her portfolio.

Do these so called pundits and politicians all get together occasionally to compare notes, synchronize their watches, get marching orders?
I mean, how is it they all come out at the same time with similar messages? Some people know something. Someone has information on when and where they make their plans. Emails, texts, zoom meetings, etc. We on the other side have got to start playing hardball, we have got to hit back and hard. We have been far to nice, far to well mannered for too long.

These folks have to be named for who and what they are, Graham. If we don't do that, we're fools.
