Where Fools Congregate

CPAC -- the Conservative Political Action Conference -- is taking place over the weekend in Orlando, Florida. It's interesting to see who isn't there. Lawrence Martin writes:

A star of the show for many years was Mitt Romney, the standard bearer against Barack Obama in 2012. But this time, having voted in favour of Donald Trump’s impeachment, the senator from Utah couldn’t even get an invitation.

“We won’t credential him as a conservative,” conference chair Matt Schlapp said. It’s good Mr. Romney is staying away, he added, because if he came, “I would actually be afraid for his physical safety.”

Also persona non grata is Nikki Haley, Mr. Trump’s former United Nations representative, who has been touted as a leading candidate to top the party ticket in 2024. She should have been a keynote speaker. But she castigated Mr. Trump, saying he took the party down a path it should not have followed. She then tried to arrange a meeting with the demagogue at Mar-a-Lago. He snubbed her. The conference is doing the same.

Those who are there have drunk the Kool-Aid:

The agenda features several panels and speakers who will uphold Mr. Tump’s fantasyland claim that he won the election. None of the 10 House Republicans who voted for impeachment are among the 47 Republican members of Congress slated to speak.

A few Republicans have broken with Trump. But the vast majority have not. This is Trump's Party. Junior has suggested that the event be renamed TPAC. There is even a six-foot-tall golden statue of Trump in the lobby. The party has its own golden calf.

Unfortunately, there is no Moses who will descend from the mountain to break up the orgy.

I wouldn't be so sure about Moses. According to reports, most CPAC attendants were neither masked nor distanced. While that may not break up the orgy immediately, it's bound to have some repercussions in the medium term.

As for Romney, Haley et al., that's a lot of cancellations for a group that spends so much time criticizing "cancel culture."

Perhaps they will be wiped out by the plague, Cap -- which has assumed Biblical proportions.

It's being widely billed as a radical rightwing freak show and, judging by the speakers roster, it is.

What a gaggle of ring kissers. Trump is going to be chafed.

No chance for Niki Haley? What a shame. I was so looking forward to a woman republican present who spoke to everyone as if she was a kindergarten teacher. I wonder if the Trump statue has a particular appendage that the enraptured can polish or rub for good luck. Remember Timothy Eaton's bronze toe?

The ass kissers are truly perilously close to the heart of darkness, Mound.

Owen Gray said...

It's all about rubbing Trump's ego, zoombats. As Mound suggests, it's located in his rear end.

The inclusion of the gold statue, without a trace of irony, tells us all we need to know about this pestilent ilk, Owen.

Owen Gray said...

And the base of the party calls itself "Christian", Lorne.

BB says...... There is one very small area on that statue that will be polished to a high degree by the nob gobblers of the republicking party. Donny at this time of his life can't rise to the occasion any more that is why a statue was brought to the get together. Cruz is the lead or should I say the HEAD polisher.

The shape of the CPAC stage also tells us all we need to know about where the party is headed. The stage is shaped like an Odal rune, which was used as the insignia for a unit of the Waffen SS. The symbol is banned in Germany, but is used by neo-Nazis to replace the better-known swastika. CPAC claims this was a mere coincidence. Yeah, sure, if you say so.

Cruz's name will live in infamy, BB.

As Lorne suggests, Cap, these people lack any sense of irony.

What's the point of having this thing? It's just another rally for the man. These "conservatives" have lost their minds. Free, white and over twenty-one. How can grown men and women sit there and listen to his kid without giving in to the urge to smash his face in? Where's the personal pride? It's hard to believe. Where do you learn to grovel like that? Cartoon characters.

That really is the most important question, John. How do you learn to grovel like that?
