Craven Cowards

Yesterday, Donald Trump's lawyers argued that it was too late to convict Donald Trump of high crimes and misdemeanors. That should have been done, they proclaimed, while he was in office. Jennifer Rubin writes:

Let’s not forget that the only reason the impeachment, which the House voted on before Trump left office, was not sent to trial immediately was because then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his fellow Republicans stalled. They break the hypocrisy meter by turning around and claiming that the Senate, therefore, cannot try Trump now.

The Democratic house managers simply let the pictures from that day speak for themselves:

The Post reported: “Almost every senatorial eye in the chamber was glued to the screens as lead House manager Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) played a 13-minute video depicting the events of Jan. 6 to introduce the impeachment case against [former president Donald Trump] — with a few notable exceptions.” It was obvious why Republican Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.), Rick Scott (Fla.), and Rand Paul (Ky.) cravenly averted their gaze: The scenes were so disturbing as to render their defense of the former president a moral abomination.

The voices of rioters parroting Trump’s incendiary words dismantle the notion that rioters were not motivated by Trump. “If that’s not an impeachable offense, then there’s no such thing,” Raskin concluded after the video.

Trump's senators -- and most Republicans in the House -- will refuse to convict him. But that refusal will mark them forever as craven cowards.

"But that refusal will mark them forever as craven cowards." A fitting epitaph, Owen, for the Gormless Old Party.

I'm certain, Lorne, that Abraham Lincoln would disown them.

Perhaps Trump will hire a monkey to represent him from now on. It's clear that Republicans will vote in his favour regardless of how shoddy the defense. And monkeys would be cheaper. But although cheaper to buy than most human beings, a monkey might be impossible to hire: they are stubborn creatures with minds of their own.

If you examine the word "democracy" which most Americans think that they alone invented, you notice that the first 4 letters read "demo" which is slang for demolish (or break apart).

It seems as if these GOPers have no idea what words they like to prattle on about as in, we the party of personal responsibility, blah, blah, blah, actually mean because all they hear is a newer language - Trumpspeak!

The Republicans have already hired three monkeys, CD. They are the two used to represent see and hear no evil. Unfortunately, the third monkey -- speak no evil -- is a fraud.

The Republicans use language elastically, Lulymay. It reflects the elasticity of their consciences.

Re the video: Did Ted Cruz watch?? Josh Hawley?? Well, I watched the video and I found it haunting. This event was nothing short of mob rule, the torch and pitchfork gang of the 21st century. No small wonder many feared for their lives as AOC, among others, has made clear. (For which she was derided by Fox News lowlife Tucker Carlson.) And this is happening in the legislative Capitol of “We the people” in the supposedly best functioning democracy in the world. A riot promoted by the President! himself! I might imagine eyes were averted because of a profound sense of shame but I quickly realize that can’t be why they avert their eyes as shame has long since left the political arena in America. Another reason why Trump will never be held accountable. Will the absolving Senators once again avert their eyes, this time in the morning mirror? Doubt that too! Mac

Your point about the Republican lack of shame, Mac, is unassailable. Like Trump himself, they have no consciences.

As shoddy as the defense may be, it's hard to get a conviction when half the jurors are co-conspirators.

Precisely, Cap. They helped spread the big lie.
