Enemies Of Democracy

I wrote yesterday that the Ottawa Occupation was a con job. The con job began when the people involved were called protesters. Michael Harris writes that these folks were no protesters:

You don’t have to look very far to confirm that. One of their stated goals was to topple the government. Another was to secure the resignation of Justin Trudeau, implying he was a Nazi.

Which is to say, that they did not come with a critique and a point of view, as legitimate protesters do. They came with ugly biases, lies and an ultimatum. Get rid of all the mandated restrictions related to the pandemic, and get rid of this federal government and this PM or else. Last time I looked, parliament and elected MPs make the laws, not mobs holding their fellow citizens hostage to their cause.

And just exactly what did they mean with their threat, or else?

Or else they would not leave.

Or else they would shut down the national capital, paralyzing a city of 1.18 million people.

Or else they would “slow-roll” their trucks around Ottawa airport to further disrupt things.

Or else their supporters would shut down the Ambassador Bridge, costing the economy $3 billion before it was done.

Or else others would clog border crossings in places like Coutts, Alberta, where four “protesters” are now facing conspiracy to murder charges.

They've left Ottawa. But they've regrouped in places like VanKleek Hill, on the Quebec border.  They haven't gone away. So let's drop the word protesters and call them what they are.

They are enemies of our democracy. And, if they get their way, they'll take it down.

Bob Rae had a great response yesterday to the claim that the truckers were legitimate protestors. He wrote,

A truck is not a speech. A horn is not a voice. An occupation is not a protest. A blockade is not freedom, it blocks the liberty of all. A demand to overthrow a government is not a dialogue. The expression of hatred is not a difference of opinion. A lie is not the truth.

That about sums it up.

I saw Rae's statement yesterday, Cap. And you're right. It's a concise summary of what has happened.

I see that Tamara Lich has been denied bail. A fitting decision, given the judge's concerns, but no doubt the crazed right will make her into a martyr of that tyrant Trudeau, eh?

And, like her husband, they'll claim that their "first amendment rights" have been violated, Lorne.

Some of these people live in an alternate universe. I have been researching some of these groups and discovered Diagolon,a hypothetical country slashing across the North American continent from Alaska to Florida and including the three western provinces of Canada. The Plaid Army, if I have this right, aspire to setting up this country and have a Diagolon flag consisting of a white slash from top left(Alaska) to bottom right (Florida) on a black background.

The remainder of the North American continent is called Circulon and for some reason includes Manitoba. So it's dags against circs. Sheesh.

i think we all need to understand more about these strange ideas in order not to be surprised again. It sounds like some video game but some people take this stuff way too seriously for our safety.

I agree, ffd. We can no longer ignore these people. The best way to deal with them is to know who they are.
