The Circular Firing Squad

The Democratic Party is forming a circular firing squad. Paul Waldman writes in  The Washington Post:

Faced with voting rights legislation felled by Sens. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema’s (D-Ariz.) devotion to the filibuster, Manchin’s destruction of the Build Back Better social infrastructure bill and the likelihood of losing the House in November, some of the more vulnerable Democrats are searching for anything that might convince the voters they ought to be returned to office.

You can understand their frustration. The House has done its job for the past year, passing one piece after another of the Democratic agenda, only to watch the bills die in the Senate. Perhaps it’s a tribute to a few members’ faith in the wisdom of the voters that they believe that if the public sees them trying hard to accomplish worthwhile things, they might be rewarded.

They're beginning to think that the Republicans will take back the House this year. But that doesn't have to happen:

Only two times in recent decades has the president’s party avoided a major defeat in a midterm election — and it wasn’t because the party delivered well-designed legislation that brought tangible benefits to the electorate, who then flocked to the polls in a show of gratitude.

If Democrats could come up with a really good reason for voters to hate Republicans and fear their return to power — and pound it relentlessly until November — it might motivate enough Democrats to get to the polls to avert disaster. But they haven’t done it yet.

And given the information which continues to come out about Donald Trump's attempted coup, they ought to be mad as hell. We'll see what happens.

cause it is working out so well with Joe.

Resurrecting Hilary would be a big mistake, PoV.

I am glad to see you are back at your desk continuing to provide food for thought. This morning, I am drinking a coffee after taking meds for a heart condition which developed after a very bad fall while in South Korea January 4, 2020. I knew about this pandemic at the end of November 2019 after arriving SK on November 1, 2019 as did all Koreans. At the time the Chinese did not know what to call it except to say, it was a very bad pneumonia. We all know what it is today. It has been a mind boggling time ever since: Keeping oneself safe, staying informed with the latest medical information and taking responsibility for our actions, following what is recommended by healthcare officials while remaining civil toward the general population. Thank you to you, the Mound, and all the others who take time to comment and write about issues affecting all of us whether we like it or not. My computer is not connected to the internet so I have access to an IPod owned by the lady with whom I share accommodation. That is why at this time, I only respond to sites that allow anonymous comment. It is worrisome what is happening in the world politically with unsubstantiated option by people like “Peterson”. That you for your blog and that of “The Disaffected Lib Mk?”. Anyong

How are things health wise? Did you confirm Covid?

Yes…I also believe Hilary would be a disaster. Anyong

I'm sure The Mound is grateful for your comment, Anyong. Healthwise, things have been improving. My wife is completely recovered and I'm almost there, too.

As I mentioned to Anyong, PoV, we're on the mend. It just takes a while to get there.

If Biden wants to help his party win in the midterms, he could take a page out of Macron's playbook and start pissing off (enmerder as Macron put it) the overwhelmingly Trumpists anti-vaxxers. Macron is also facing an election this year and is looking to tap into impatience of the vast majority of citizens with the reckless antics of the unvaxxed few.

Without having to deal with the terrible Sinemanchin twins, Biden has open to him a variety of administrative remedies to turn up the heat on anti-vaxxers. Yes, these are likely to be overturned by the highly partisan Supreme Court, but that will motivate even more Dems to get out to the polls. The big question is whether there is any way at this point to overcome the laws the GOP has passed at the state level to overturn results they don't like.

Polls show that a majority of Americans are behind Biden, Cap. He must drive home the message that everything that Republicans are doing is about entrenching minority rule.
