It's A Hard Rain That's Gonna Fall

The Republican Senate has killed a bipartisan committee to investigate the assault on the American Capitol on January 6th. Karen Tumulty writes:

You’ve got to at least give Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) some credit for candor.
In pressing Senate Republicans to kill the idea of an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump, McConnell did not bother to disguise the fact that he was making a cravenly political calculation.

So, yes, it's all about politics. But, if you look a little deeper, what's really going on is truly disturbing:

The more dangerous truth is that a not-insignificant portion of the GOP’s Trumpian base actually appears to believe that the violent mob was justified in its effort to disrupt Congress as it conducted its pro forma tally of the electoral votes that made Joe Biden the 46th president.
These are the people who have bought into Trump’s lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him, and who share at least some of the unhinged theories that fuel the QAnon movement.
A new poll released by the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute and the Interfaith Youth Core shows that these dangerous and conspiratorial beliefs are not confined to the country’s dank backwaters.
Fully 20 percent of more than 5,500 adults questioned in all 50 states — and 28 percent of Republicans among them — said they agreed with the statement that “there is a storm coming soon that will sweep away the elites in power and restore the rightful leaders.”
Even more worrisome were the 15 percent overall — and, again, 28 percent of Republicans — who were of the opinion that because “things have gotten so off track, true American patriots may have to resort to violence in order to save our country.”

As Bob Dylan wrote decades ago, "it's a hard, hard rain that's gonna fall."

We know that a party that stages a failed coup then blocks an investigation ultimately wants that coup to succeed. The Republicans are openly declaring their fascism and daring Democrats to respond.

So what are Democrats doing? Well, Garland won't release the DOJ memo on Trump's obstruction of justice, Yellen continues to block the release of Trump's tax returns to Congress, the FBI won't investigate the elites behind the failed coup, and Dems won't get rid of the Senate filibuster to pass a new voting rights law. Dems can't even get all their senators to show up for a vote to investigate the attempted coup!

A party that won't quickly and aggressively investigate a failed coup and prosecute those behind it also wants the coup to succeed. Hell, Hitler was jailed two days after a failed coup. The Dems aren't even up to Weimar standards of resistance! They're complicit, and the US is going to go through some things as Trump would say.

I very much fear the the contagion will (perhaps already has) contaminate the thinking here in Canada guys

Well, the Repugs can blame it on Q-Anon or they can blame it on a "trumped" up failed voting system, but the facts of the matter really only point out that these so-called "defenders of democracy" are only interested in their own power - and at any cost to their country.

Funny thing: they didn't moan and groan that voting procedures failed when Hilary got more votes than "the Donald"? But, of course, that's different, isn't it???

Americans are "Gunning Up" in Texas. The old "Don't Tread on Me" slogan is gaining momentum.

I have the same fear, Rural. We have enough trouble battling COVID. We don't need this more deadly virus.

They stand for two things, Lulymay: Power and Hypocrisy.

And there are plenty of guns to go around, zoombats.

Now the Republicans are objecting to the bipartisan committee that would investigate the Capitol riot because it wouldn't take a "holistic" approach to determining the causes of all the recent protests that have led to violence. They're going all holistic! They want to identify the political leaders who told somebody to set a garbage can on fire in Portland. Could it be the Jihad Squad? It'll take three years to get this one into the drawer where they ended up putting the Benghazi file. That should do it.

Meanwhile, Taylor-Greene has revealed the results of her most recent research into deep state conspiracies. She announced to an astonished audience that Hitler's NSDAP is the historical progenitor of the US Democratic Party and that the "S" in NSDAP stood for "Sozialistische". Wow! By the cheers the announcement received, it was obvious some of her audience members already had their suspicions. She's bringing America that much closer to her truth and she hasn't even mentioned George Soros yet.

Meanwhile again, Matt Gaetz is riling up his own personally-inspired gang of would-be Minutemen just as Trump did. I wonder if this idiot realizes that his Teflon isn't anywhere near as thick as his idol's. He'll find that out quick as Jack the Bear if one of his Minutemen is dumb enough to take a shot-heard-round-the-world that injures somebody any more important than somebody the cult could claim to be a BLM or Antifa guy.

What are the opponents of Republican lunacy going to do? You'd have more success trying to explain something to a tree stump than to somebody who admires or tries to emulate Donald Trump.

The ignorance of a vast swath of the American population is truly dumbfounding, John.

As smug as we Canucks are about Yankee stupidity, we have more than our fair share of idiots north of the 49. (including those in parts of Eastern Canada that are south of the 49th parallel)
Having said that, the actions of McConnell, Taylor-Greene and Ted Cruz have not been mirrored up here.....yet.

Not yet, DF. But reports suggest that the disease has infected some minds in The Great White North.
